SOLE in 2019 to 2020 with the funding from the Shark Tank Think Tank Award 2019, conduct massive awareness to over 500 women in the cities of Yambio and Nzara in Western Equatoria State on the rights of South Sudanese women to own private property by addressing the cultural practices that hinder women from owning property. Based on the feedback and recommendations from the participants, it was noted that some of the institutions and stakeholders who have the authority to uphold and enforce the rights of women to own property in South Sudan are inadequately equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to defend the women who are the victims of the bad cultural practices. As such SOLE conducted trainings to stakeholders on the rights of women to own property to equip them with the tools and information necessary to defend and speak up against the cultural practices that hinder women from owning private property in South Sudan
In the months of February to March 2022, Students’ organization for liberty and entrepreneurship with support from Atlas Network implemented successfully Stakeholders training on the right of women to own land project in Yambio and Nzara Counties of Western Equatoria State of South Sudan. it was noted that some of the institutions and stakeholders who have the authority to uphold and enforce the rights of women to own property in South Sudan are inadequately equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to defend the women who are the victims of the bad cultural practices. As such SOLE conducted trainings to stakeholders on the rights of women to own property to equip them with the tools and information necessary to defend and speak up against the cultural practices that hinder women from owning private property in South Sudan.
A one day stakeholders’ training at Women Resource Center in Yambio on the right of women to own property to 52 participants where by 24 were men and 28 were women. Meanwhile a one day stakeholders training which was conducted in Nzara at Women Center was to 48 participants with which 18 were women and 30 were men. The participants were composed of women leaders, chiefs, youth leaders, police and church leaders because they are directly involved in women cases over land ownership cases.
SOLE conducted two radio talk shows on Yambio FM radio station instead of the planned radio talk shows on two different radio station because Anisa FM radio had a technical issue and was off air. Each radio talk show was for two hours facilitated by two participants who had attended our training and one SOLE staff. The radio talk shows are estimated to reach 30000 listeners out of the 11305 because the radio station does not cover the entire state. In the first radio talk show there were 49 callers comprising of 21 women and 28 men who gave good comments, appreciated the program and posed some few questions which were answered. In the second radio talk show there were 61 callers in which 41 were women and 20 were men. They also appreciated and commend the program
One community dialogue was conducted in Yambio at Ikpiro Boma 82 participants and another one in Nzara at Kapoita Boma to 71 participants. The participants were very happy about the program and asked for more because these cultural barrier cannot be addressed once. The participants in attendance were more by 3 than planned. This was due to need to some key community leaders who were supposed to attend.
SOLE successfully printed 100 T-shirts which were green in colour with both SOLE and Atlas Network logos in front while at the back a message “Promoting the Right of Women to Own Land in South Sudan” was written. The T-Shirts were distributed to 100 participants who attended the Stakeholders training on the right of women to own land in South Sudan.
All the participants appreciated the program and asked for more to be extended to areas in South Sudan that have not been reached.
